Captain Graeme Smith has equalled Hansie Cronje’s record for the most wins by a South Africa Test team, chalking up number 27 after the innings win over India on Saturday.

The innings and 90 run victory in Ahmedabad that put the Proteas 1-0 up in the three-match series levelled the late Cronje’s record of 27 wins in his 53 Tests as captain. Smith has led South Africa on 56 occasions, with 15 losses and 14 draws.

The win on Saturday, after India were bowled out for just 76 in their first innings, was also their biggest winning margin against India, beating the innings and 71 runs achieved by Cronje’s team in Bangalore in 2000.

South Africa will seek to close out a series win in Kanpur when the third and final Test begins on Friday.
