Bigstar Players : Graeme Smith : About Me
About Me

Profile: Graeme Smith began as a prodigy opening batsman in the Proteas team, progressing from an auspicious Test debut in which he scored 68 in the second innings against Australia at Cape Town to the team’s captain a year later. He scored 200 in just his third Test match against Bangladesh, but more impressive was his run-scoring exploits on his first Test tour of England and the manner in which he led the team when aged just 22. He plundered a national record score of 277 in the first Test at Edgbaston and then followed that with 259 at Lord’s, punishing Nasser Hussain who dropped him when on ten. The left-hander has a voracious appetite for cashing in once he has passed his century and that hunger for runs was never more evident than on that 2003 tour. He is a strong and bold leader of the Proteas team, who has never appeared to suffer a reluctance to captain such distinguished star players as Gary Kirsten, Shaun Pollock, Jacques Kallis, Herschelle Gibbs and Mark Boucher, and instead has won their respect through leading by example. In the one-day game his aggressive style has often provided invaluable impetus to his team’s innings’ whether chasing or posting totals.
